@Maro21:? Is it a good idea? Verdy p was famous for making or requesting many things of problematic value and ended being blocked for that. Is it one of their bad or good ideas? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 07:48, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Hehe:) I'm not asking for it because someone asked. We (I and Chris2map, but also others) need it to detect user's interface language which would help some templates to display text in a user's language, not page language. All details you have in linked discussions. As an example: Template:Bs:Map Features:abutters - do we want {delete} template to display text in Bosnian because Bosnian page was nominated to deletion? maro21 21:36, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
@Maro21: If a message needs to display in the user's preferred language instead of the page language ({{PAGELANGUAGE}}), that would be a good argument for moving that message itself to the MediaWiki: namespace. That way, we can take advantage of MediaWiki's built-in language fallback capability. Alternatively, if showing translations in {{Delete}} is a problem, we could just make the template unlocalizable and hard-code it in English. Abusing interface messages for template content creates problems for VisualEditor, but the problem can be confined to certain templates that are unlikely to be edited that way. Making the language code more reusable via MediaWiki:Lang would open the door to unforeseen editing bugs. This is part of the reason an interface language magic word was declined. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 02:03, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
> that would be a good argument for moving that message itself to the MediaWiki: namespace
But Mediawiki namespace can be edited only by admins, while templates can be edited by anyone. I haven't thought yet about whether the {delete} template, and others like it, should be localizable and accessible to the end user, or only in English.
> we could just make the template unlocalizable and hard-code it in English
This would also be a good solution. Unless we want to make the interface more accessible to non-English speakers, but editing here - however there aren't many of those people. But what about other templates of this type? maro21 19:20, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

By the way, Wikimedia Commons takes the approach of localized templates that match the interface language but link to versions in other languages. This table outlines the main advantages and drawbacks of five different template localization systems in use on that wiki. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 21:03, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

You see, even Wikimedia Commons is using this method with MediaWiki:Lang :). maro21 19:55, 15 April 2022 (UTC)

Create MediaWiki gadgets to enable the display of social media hashtag searches

Unresolved

I recently introduced a new template to link communication channels: Template:Communication channels @Samwilson: suggested on the forum that the template should also link hashtag searches on en.osm.town.

I just implemented that but have hidden the links by default to avoid overloading the interface with links (that might yield no or only partially relevant results). To enable the display of the links users currently have to manually edit their user style as described in Template:Communication_channels#Social media hashtags.

I think it would obviously be more convenient for users if they could just tick a checkbox in their preferences (and this could be suggested on the Twitter and Mastodon pages). So I think it would be great to introduce two respective MediaWiki gadgets.

Sidebar and create MediaWiki messages

maro21 20:00, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

@Maro21: I created the two requested messages. Mobile-frontend-languages-header-page is built into MediaWiki. We could brute-force a workaround here for certain languages, but there are a lot of languages. Instead, would you mind reporting the issue upstream, either at TranslateWiki:Support or Phabricator? Thanks! – Minh Nguyễn 💬 17:19, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
I know that it can be translated in Translatewiki, but these strings are used in our most frequently used template - Languages - so this misspelling is visible on almost every page. I chose only languages that are used here, not all. This request was due to the fact that I changed my interface language to English and saw this error. In Polish it was correct. maro21 19:09, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
@Maro21: I'm just as inclined as you are to see the hyphen-minus as a mistake, but in these languages, it is consistent with other prominent messages, such as MediaWiki:Pagetitle, which appears in every page's title (that is, in your browser's tab bar). The Polish, French, Vietnamese, and possibly other translators on TranslateWiki.net have decided to use correct punctuation throughout MediaWiki. But other language communities apparently didn't think to do that and just kept whatever the developers specified in English. There is an ancient request to completely eliminate ASCII punctuation throughout MediaWiki, but the developers do respond to more targeted requests, even at the risk of breaking lots of template code. Going this route will improve the experience for everybody and more durably than if we override the message here. If you need extra support, the TranslateWiki community can be quite effective at pushing through changes to source messages in response to demand from translators or users. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 04:55, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
Oh, I see that we're actually kind of repurposing that message in a context that maybe it wasn't designed for. We could define a new message with the desired punctuation, but we'd have to define it in each language anyways. (Some languages like Chinese normally don't use the en dash like that, if I recall correctly.) – Minh Nguyễn 💬 17:22, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

Edit MediaWiki messages

maro21 22:18, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

@Maro21: Thanks for the Polish updates; I've updated Newarticletext and Noarticletext-nopermission. Wikibase-mylanguagefallbackchain-verbatim-item is implemented upstream in MediaWiki; please request a change on TranslateWiki or Phabricator. Thanks! – Minh Nguyễn 💬 17:27, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
If I correct it on Translatewiki, how long will it take to show up here? maro21 19:11, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
They will show up here when one of the system administrators executes the update script or when the system is updated. The first option could have run automatically but this does not seem to be configured (technical explanation: LocalisationUpdate is installed but there is no cronjob to update the translations). Starting from October 2023, the first option does not work any longer so we will receive updates along with MediaWiki system updates only. In the long run, it is very beneficial to change the translations at translatewiki.net because other wikis benefit, too, and administrators do not need to maintain translations. --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 14:40, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
@Maro21: Since you added {{unresolved}}, I just want to make clear that neither Minh Nguyen nor I want to implement your suggestion for maintenance reasons. Consequently, we decline your request apart form the changes already implemented. --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 08:49, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
Ok, that makes sense. I made a request on Translatewiki to translate them. It will probably take a few years before we see changes here... maro21 21:27, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Request a move without leaving redirect page

Unresolved

Now we China community are planning to make a new proposal about standardize name:zh-* key name

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposal:Improve_Chinese_Language_Code_Conformity_to_BCP47_Standards

I first using this name as title, but after discussion another mapper raise a more detailed and exactly name, so I want to change the proposal name

Change to Standardize transliteration language tag of Mandarin language based on IETF BCP 47 standard

--快乐的老鼠宝宝 (talk) 13:41, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

Why not just move it, leaving redirect? People who saved old link will be able to use it. On Wikipedia page love to delete redirects which is really annoying as it breaks links Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:36, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
@Mateusz Konieczny: Out of the idea of not making namespace dirty, I think it is more appropriate to move without redirection-because in fact this is a proposal that has just begun to be prepared and has not been referenced elsewhere. The title when creating this page is not very sure. Change to the final name as soon as it is not cited. --快乐的老鼠宝宝 (talk) 04:05, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Vandalism by Pinkysm23

Unresolved

I see vandalism by new user Pinkysm23. @Lyx: Could you please check and block? --Chris2map (talk) 20:12, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

Looking at this case, the one above and this comment there may be a problem with mobile editing. Andrew (talk) 06:19, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
With the first one above I think definitely not, see Special:Diff/2598366.
Neither with the "Election to Board" one I think. There is no mobile edit stated (only visual editor). But the link is OK. Simply the wiki user page doesn't exist. Maybe a confusion with which links to OSM user page and which to wiki user page.
With the new one noted by me I must admit that there is the possibility of unwanted damage. But the edits don't make sense. --Chris2map (talk) 16:03, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

The screenshot would be out of date anyway – now Guru Maps – the terms doesn't allow the use of any material for us, since not expressly authorized by Evgen Bodunov JDG, Guru Maps, see https://gurumaps.app/terms_of_service#copyright
SomeoneTM has to ask them to give us a screenshot including permission, and by the way same for the logo. --Chris2map (talk) 15:17, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

Category:Labelled for deletion

Would it be possible for sysops to look at least through some entries at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:Labelled_for_deletion ?

330 categories, 204 articles and 229 images are there.

Is there any way how regular wiki editors can help there?

Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 16:43, 14 June 2024 (UTC)

May it help to add some structure to the labelled for deletion categorization? E.g. subdivisions (categories) for standard cases like pages "created by accident", media "without a license", spam content, ... --Chris2map (talk) 19:33, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
Basically all file deletion requests are license related Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 17:10, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
May it help to promote someone trusted (e.g. Mateusz or Chris) to administrators, as minimum temporarily? Something B (talk) 23:13, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
I would be happy to help remove the pages, but I don't have the admin tools (I assure that I would do it with caution, and leave contentious cases for discussion or clarification). I am active on the Wiki, I'm online almost every day, and some of the deletion requests that I have written slow down my work, because, for example, they involve removing a redirect to move an article there. And these requests have been waiting for several months. Without removal I can't move, and without moving I can't continue to improve. It would be nice if someone active was an administrator (e.g., Chris2map or me; let's let the people who are willing to do the work do it), because we currently have 18 administrators, 17 of whom are inactive (Minh is active, but rarely does deletion). Tigerfell used to delete pages once a month and somehow it worked, but now he's inactive, maybe he doesn't have time. maro21 21:56, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

@Maro21: Thanks for volunteering! You'll need to request permissions on Talk:Wiki for the broader community's input; this is a page for requests made to existing administrators. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 16:24, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
We already have categorization: Category:Labelled_for_deletion is for obvious cases, Category:Deletion_Proposed is for other cases. maro21 21:56, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
Category:Deletion proposed is de facto ignored (not processed at all). Something B (talk) 22:08, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
Wrote at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User_talk:Lyx#Requested_deletions_backlog - will write to other sysops later if it does not help Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 06:05, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
Tried at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User_talk:Minh_Nguyen#Deletions Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 12:45, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
@Mateusz Konieczny: Thanks for the heads-up. Seems like these deletion requests come in waves, so it's difficult to keep them low all the time. I just processed all the requests in the Item: namespace and deleted 122 categories created by yourself (about users of Garmin devices) and User:Babel AutoCreate (probably mostly the result of Verdy_p trying to create facts on the ground for obscure languages). Unfortunately, I can't go further for now, because all this deletion is giving me repetitive stress injury. It sure would be nice to have more efficient tools for this sort of thing. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 16:24, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
A big thank to Minh Nguyễn for doing a big bunch of waiting deletions! Have a good rest and get well! I hope others will help. --Chris2map (talk) 12:16, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

Timeless skin

Unresolved

Can an admin make a request on the OSM Operations issue tracker to install the Timeless skin? I'd really like to be able to use it here, it should already be bundled with MediaWiki and just need one line added to LocalSettings.php to enable it. Thank you :) Kinsio (talk) 17:23, 6 August 2024 (UTC)

Undo link text broken on British English version of "View History"

Unresolved

Whenever I click the "view history" tab I see "cin gbere le" instead of "Undo" in the final brackets next to the "thank" link. This appears to be similar to what is being discussed here but I don't have permission to fix https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Editundo/en-gb as suggested there. --InsertUser (talk) 18:46, 24 August 2024 (UTC)

It's not a request for our administrators because the string comes from an external source. It is because someone mistakenly added Nupe translation to British English ones. Minh Nguyen previously declined to overwrite MediaWiki messages here so I suppose you have to wait for an external translation update. maro21 20:13, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
But it is a request to our administrator, because the upstream version you linked is already fixed and ours is still broken. So whether it's a matter of editing it manually or running an update script it's still something that needs to be done our end. --InsertUser (talk) 13:34, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

Change username on wiki

Resolved

Hello sysops!

I'm hoping you can help me, I'm hoping to change my username from User:Speedbirdsunflower to User:Éimí. Understandably the option to move users is not available generally, so I am hopeful that you can help. I have already made a similar change on OSM itself.

Thanks!
