YouthMappers UFRJ
Our mission
With the YouthMappers UFRJ Chapter, it is expected to promote the training of students, professors, researchers and other actors, in collaborative mapping using the OpenStreetMap, an international project that provides an online collaborative cartographic database and related softwares.
In this way, we also seek to promote citizen science, based on the thematic of the Risk and Disaster Reduction (RDR), with the opportunity to collaboratively map locations subject to flooding, landslides and coastal erosion in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

OpenStreetMap Mapping Training Course
The OpenStreetMap mapping training course is offered in Portuguese and includes the basic resources needed to carry out collaborative mapping on the Internet, from participating as a mapper to organizing a mapathon (like a mapping marathon).

curso.osm.ivides@gmail.com
The course is designed and instructed by Dr. Raquel Dezidério Souto (IVIDES.org) and the course load is 60 hours. This course is part of the YouthMappers UFRJ Chapter and more information can be obtained on the course portal and by email.
Due to the success of its first edition (2023), the course was transformed into a continuous flow course (self-enrollment) and participants can complete it remotely and send their activity results, following the guidelines contained in the course parts.
To conquest the course's certificate, the participant must have satisfactorily completed and submitted 70% of the ten activities indicated in this program (corresponding, at least, to seven activities). Data processing will be carried out every six months and certificates will be sent by email to the participant.

Initial Scope
The YouthMappers UFRJ Chapter begins with actions that consist of promoting training in collaborative mapping, using the OpenStreetMap cartographic base. The chosen initial temathic for the development of mapping activities of the YouthMappers UFRJ chapter is the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), with a focus on the risk areas of the State of Rio de Janeiro. This initiative aims to contribute with informational support for research and decision-making (and other purposes). Thus, the mapathons (marathons of mapping), promoted by the YouthMappers UFRJ Chapter, will specifically cover areas subject to disasters - risks of landslides, floods and inundations, coastal erosion; according to the Brazilian Integrated Disaster Information System (S2id) and other official data sources.
About Us
The YouthMappers UFRJ Chapter is part of the international project YouthMappers and is coordinated by Dr. Raquel Dezidério Souto (Virtual Institute for Sustainable Development – IVIDES.org ), its president, and Dr. Manoel do Couto Fernandes (Laboratory of Cartography – GeoCart-UFRJ), mentor professor, in a partnership with the Integrated Laboratory of Applied Physical Geography (LiGA-UFRRJ), the Space Laboratory for Remote Sensing and Environmental Studies (Espaço-UFRJ) and other groups.
