导入数据或自动化编辑只应由那些经验丰富并且理解OSM社区建设地图的方式的人施行，并只能谨慎地 计划并与当地社区协商后再行动。

导入是将外部数据上传至OSM的过程。

大部分导入很少被当作是单个志愿者收集的数据的补充，并且他们的数据和在区域工作的能力总是有优先级。许多免费的潜在数据源在之前就被上传至OSM，像荷兰的AND Data，美国的TIGER，加拿大的Canvec，以及马萨诸塞州的MassGIS。

不像编辑地图或是上传GPX轨迹，导入结合了一个存在的数据集与OSM数据集，并因此需要一个复杂的合并过程。
