2010 07 Pakistan Floods/Imagery and data sources/DMA Maps Mosaic
Jean-Guilhem has put together a mosaic of US Defense Mapping Agency maps from the Perry-Castaneda map collection, mainly along the Indus valley, available as TMS (for Potlatch and JOSM slippymap plugin) and WMS (for JOSM wmsplugin).
It includes maps from the "Joint Operations Graphic" series, either "Combined" (1501C series) or "Air" (1501AIR series), from the 80s and 90s. The "Combined" maps include more place names. Where no map from these series was available, a few older maps, from the 50s and 60s have been used (U502 series). The paper scale of the maps is 1:250,000.
It can be visualised as a background layer in the coverage map.
How to use
- For Potlatch, copy and paste the following link into "Options / Custom background": [1]
- For JOSM slippymap plugin, see [2] for example with the following new advanced preferences:
slippymap.custom_tile_source_3.name=Pakistan 250k mosaic slippymap.custom_tile_source_3.url=http://osm.arkemie.org/cgi-bin/tiles/1.0.0/pakistan_250k_mosaic slippymap.custom_tile_source_3.ext=jpg
- For JOSM wmsplugin, copy and paste THIS LINK into "WMS -> Rectified image... -> Custom WMS link". For adequate display resolution and download speed performance, load the layer where the JOSM scale bar tells 3km.
Note: As mentioned on the maps, "Areas adjacent to the Indus river are subject to continual change due to shifting of the river bed". Keep also in mind that paper scanning and georeferencing from jpeg compressed scans introduce inaccuracies, so when GPS tracks are available, for instance, don't hesitate to shift this background to fit existing OSM data.
