Virginia’s First Annual Science Festival! "We’re throwing a big party where the punch is spiked with science!"

National Agricultural Imagery Program The Department of Geography at VT once had a WMS available for local use with the WMS plug-in for JOSM. Imagery was from the 2008 National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP).

Roads
The TIGER data was not at the appropriate scale for detailed mapping, so the Road Center Line data available from the Town of Blacksburg was imported.
The Virginia Geographic Information Network Public Road Center Line (RCL) product is a consistent, statewide digital file. The RCL geometry is public domain and participates in a routine update cycle.
Buildings
All buildings available from the Town of Blacksburg's GIS data were imported on April 9, 2010. Other buildings have been traced from NAIP imagery. Building heights from a student thesis: http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/theses/available/etd-09202001-155212/unrestricted/1etd_dodd_0911.pdf have been entered (The actual source is from some old lidar data). VT facilities may have complete coverage and higher accuracy, their information is not in a readily accessible database.

- Map Blacksburg Day - March 25, 2012. Focus will be on completing existing coverage and wardriving.
- Mapping Day - April 23rd, 2011. Focus will be on an efficient aerial imagery-driven workflow and integration into the 3D Blacksburg project.
- OpenStreetMap and 3D Blacksburg Mapping Day The event was held Saturday, April 10, 2010, from 10:00am to 4:00pm in Torgersen Hall, on the Virginia Tech Blacksburg Campus. Training, GPS units, lab computers and other hardware provided. Additional information on this project available at the Linux and Unix Users Group website (http://vtluug.org/osm).
- GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week celebration - November 16-20, 2009. Campaign to raise awareness of OpenStreetMap and other participatory mapping activities for local communities. The 3D Blacksburg Collaborative is holding an experimental 3-D Mapping event on Thursday, November 19 from 2-5 pm, contact sforza [at] vt.edu for details.
- Mapping Day - November 7th, 2009. Qualcomm has generously provided an Android G1 phone to be raffled off between participating mappers.
