Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground is a campground in Bay Lake, Florida at latitude 28°24′12.75″ North, longitude 81°33′38.34″ West.
The Fort Wilderness Resort is one of nineteen of the Disney owned hotels and resorts on Walt Disney World Resort property. Fort Wilderness opened on November 19, 1971 and sits on the South shore of Bay Lake and is the only campground on the Disney World property. Transportation around the campground includes Rental Golf Carts and foot and to exit the campground Disney Busses are available as well as Water Taxis for free to Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Wilderness Lodge with connecting taxi to Magic Kingdom,
History
Disney's River Country
Disney's River Country opened June 20, 1976 and closed on November 2, 2001. River Country was the Disney World's first water park and was themed after the 'Good old Swimming Hole'. Being built against the shore of Bay Lake much of the water from the park came from the lake after being filtered. After several deaths due to water bacteria from the lake an taller wall was built around the park shore so now the water system was completely separated. River Country lasted until the close of the season of November 2001 but did not reopen for the Spring of 2002 due to the decreasing tourism to Central Florida because the September 11th, 2001 tourist attacks. The park still sits still as a brown site and many urban explorers sneak into the park for videos even though Disney Security patrols the site.
Fort Wilderness Railroad
The Fort Wilderness Railroad opened in 1973 and closed in 1980 and was built to 4/5 scale. The Railroad encircled the Resort and stopped at various campgrounds and at Pioneer Hall. After a pedestrian accident, growing concerns with more accidents, maintenance issues, and noise concerns the Railroad was closed. Some of the track can still be seen on the outskirts of Fort Wilderness and two Passenger cars are still in existence: One at Disney Springs and the other at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon
