This is the OpenStreetMap Ecuador project page.

Here we are making the most complete and updated map of Ecuador, free for everyone.

Some things you can do in OpenStreetMap

  • Check the map directly on the computer.
  • Print the paper map at different scales (by clicking on the "Export" tab).

The map is constantly being created and updated. You can help too!

  • If you find a bug on the map, you can easily report it on OpenStreetBugs.
  • Or you can fix the error yourself by editing the map directly.
  • Also, if you have a GPS or a cell phone with GPS you can map parts that are not yet on the map.

Ideas/Conventions

List of ideas and conventions to coordinate the map.

  • How to name gas stations and other establishments with multiple branches: I suggest using when it comes to gas stations: brand=Primax (example). If you want you can add name=Primax centro histórico (example).

For banks, hotels etc I suggest operator=Banco de Guayaquil (example). If you want you can add name=Banco de Guayaquil Michelena (example). ATMs are indicated with the tag atm=yes.

  • How to name streets: For the street names that are entered on the map I suggest using the name of the streets as indicated on the signs that the municipalities have placed on the corners and not the traditional name of the street, since city visitors does not know those traditional names and for the OSM maps to be valid, the name on the street must match the name indicated on the map.

"Tierra Pura" project: mapping vulnerable communities located on volcanos
The Tierra Pura (Pure land) project is an idea co-designed between OpenLabEc, HOTOSM, Youthmappers ESPE Geomap, Everywhere She Maps and AEON Art Gallery, to collaboratively map the communities surrounding volcanoes in Ecuador, starting with the Cayambe volcano. It is integrated into the exhibition "Tierra Pura" in the House of Culture of Quito, as part of the international meeting of geophysics "Latin American and Caribbean Seismological Commission IV Assembly (LACSC) 2022" from October 3 to 5.
In this process, expert mappers, scientists, university students (from ESPE and ENP), and women from the communities around the Cayambe volcano, will collaborate in improving the OSM map with remote mapping (Id Editor, JOSM) and field mapping (fieldpapers, Streetcomplete, Mapillary, Organicmap), points of interest on traditional productive activities will be added mapping with women from the communities, and it will be socialized with the municipality and experts, in order to be an input for risk management in the event of possible eruptions. The interventions to the map and documentary photographs with a narrative about the objective of the intervention, will be part of the exhibition "Tierra Pura" and will later be delivered to the cultural center of the municipality of Cayambe.

Administrative Boundaries

Administrative Boundaries in Ecuador are organised in relations as follows

  • admin_level = 2: National boundary
  • admin_level = 4: Provinces - identified by state_code tag
  • admin_level = 6: Canton - identified by county_code tag
  • admin_level = 8: Parroquias - identified by municipality_code tag

The redaction process has destroyed very large parts of the relations/boundaries.

Open Issues

  • name tag prefix cleanup: Most of the name tags are prefixed with either Province, Canton or Parroquia. This is not anymore the case. Either all should get a name prefix or none.
  • wikipedia links are not complete
  • Cantons that have no Parroquia have a county_code and a municipality_code tag. Maybe one is enough?
  • Name tags include sometimes an old or alternative name (i suspect) in brackets. It would be better to move those parts in a seperate tag (perhaps alt_name or something)
  • boundaries with state code 90 (Zona no delimitada) are tagged as Cantons. Perhaps this is wrong.

Well I think it's not the right place, but somewhere it would be good to indicate abnormalities with international conventions, especially those that have to do with tourism and traffic. Maybe some better examples:

  • What is known as a motel in Ecuador is NOT the same as a motel in the rest of the world. In most parts of the world a motel is a cheap hotel, possibly so cheap that it allows you to stay for a long time. Perhaps you go to one if you have lost your job or home. Now, in Ecuador, a motel is more like a hotel for short visits; usually has a clientele of dubious morality. It is not a place for families.
  • The international rule of giving way to the driver on your right is generally not taken into account in the country (I don't know if this rule is even in the law). Instead, in some places there are signs with "Primary" (the road that has right of way) and "Secondary" (the road that has to give way).
  • Unlike most of the world, it is not allowed to change lanes inside the tunnels in the country, even if all the lanes go in the same direction.
  • Please note that zebra crossings are not respected, so use the pedestrian bridge if there is one, or wait until there are no cars, before crossing the road.

I do not want to include these warnings to criticize anyone, but many tourists would appreciate knowing things like these in advance, so as not to end up in embarrassing or even dangerous situations.
