The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) Community Working Group (WG) is organizing the Humanitarian Open Mapping Awards to be presented at this year's State of the Map (SotM) conference in Nairobi, Kenya. These awards aim to recognize outstanding contributions from open mapping communities and individuals.

Categories

Humanitarian Mapper of the Year
Given to an individual who has made exceptional contributions to mapping projects that directly address humanitarian needs
Humanitarian Data Quality Champion of the Year
An individual who has made a significant contribution to the quality of OSM data through either validation or training validator
Community Organizer of the Year Asia Pacific Region
An individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and organization in building and supporting a vibrant open mapping community in the Asia Pacific Region
Community Organizer of the Year West And North Africa
An individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and organization in building and supporting a vibrant open mapping community in the West and North Africa Region
Community Organizer of the Year East and Southern Africa
An individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and organization in building and supporting a vibrant open mapping community in the East and Southern Africa Region
Community Organizer of the Year Latin America and the Caribbean
An individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and organization in building and supporting a vibrant open mapping community in the Latin America and the Caribbean Region
Community Project of the Year Asia Pacific Region
Exemplary open mapping projects that have made a significant impact on communities and addressed local needs in the Asia Pacific region
Community Project of the Year West And North Africa
Exemplary open mapping projects that have made a significant impact on communities and addressed local needs in the West And North Africa
Community Project of the Year Eastern and Southern Africa
Exemplary open mapping projects that have made a significant impact on communities and addressed local needs in Eastern and Southern Africa
Community Project of the Year Latin America and the Caribbean
Exemplary open mapping projects that have made a significant impact on communities and addressed local needs in Latin America and the Caribbean region
Special Recognition Award
An individual who has made significant contributions to the field of humanitarian open mapping through tech contribution, writing & documentation, innovation, activation, mentorship, leadership, and training, etc

Timeline

  • Call for Nominations: 23 July - 18 August
  • Review and Selection of Winners: 19 - 31 August
  • Award Ceremony: State of the Map conference, September 6-8

Winners

The winners of the 2024 Humanitarian Open Mapping Awards were announced on the 7th of September at the State of the Map conference. They were

  • The Humanitarian Mapper of the Year 2024 went to Antonin Haas for his exceptional contributions to mapping projects that directly address humanitarian needs.
  • The Special Recognition Award 2024 went to Arnalie Vicario for her significant contributions to the field of humanitarian open mapping through tech contribution, writing & documentation, innovation, activation, mentorship, leadership, and training.
  • The Humanitarian Data Quality Champion of the Year 2024 went to Wahyu Djatmiko for his significant contribution to improving the quality of OpenStreetMap data in Indonesia.
  • The Community Organizer of the Year Asia Pacific 2024 went to Sawan Shariar for his outstanding leadership and organization in building and supporting a vibrant open mapping community in the Asia Pacific Region.
  • The Community Organizer of the Year West and North Africa 2024 went to Yves Emmanuel Nikoyo for his outstanding leadership and organization in building and supporting a vibrant open mapping community in the West and North Africa Region.
  • The Community Organizer of the Year East and Southern Africa 2024 went to Walter Mayeku for his outstanding leadership and organization in building and supporting a vibrant open mapping community in the East and Southern Africa Region.
  • The Community Organizer of the Year Latin America and the Caribbean 2024 went to Andres Gomez for his outstanding leadership and organization in building and supporting a vibrant open mapping community in Latin America and the Caribbean Region.
  • The Community Project of the Year Asia Pacific Region 2024 went to Perkumpulan OpenStreetMap Indonesia for their "Involvement of Scout Community in Disaster Preparedness through Open Mapping and OpenStreetMap Utilization open mapping project" that has made a significant impact on communities and addressed local needs in the Asia Pacific region.
  • The Community Project of the Year West and North Africa 2024 went to OpenStreetMap Niger for their Water Access in Rural Niger (RUWA) open mapping project that has made a significant impact on communities and addressed local needs in the West and North Africa.
  • The Community Project of the Year Eastern and Southern Africa 2024 went to Arid Lands Information Network for their exemplary open mapping project that has made a significant impact on communities and addressed local needs in Eastern and Southern Africa.
