IET Import - Rivers
The objective is to fully add and/or update the rivers, reservoirs and other watercourses of the Galician territory. This project is part of the "IET Import" process.
Summary
Galician rivers project:
- Objective: add/update rivers, reservoirs and other inland or coastal (e.g.. estuaries) water bodies.
- Import data: IET's shapefile datasets "Ríos" and "'Encoros" (Source: mapas.xunta.gal > Descargas: section Hidrografía: Ríos e Encoros)
- License: IET signed a CC BY 4.0 license compatibility letter and a ODBL permission letter for using their data (See "License section" at IET_Import#License)
- Import type: Multiple step import (river basins as working areas). One/few coordinators, multiple editors.
- Schedule: long-term.
- Tags: natural=water + water=river or waterway=riverbank, water=reservoir (+ waterway=dam ?)
- Responsible editors: Miguel Branco (Coordinator?), (other editors)
Goals
Fulfil the mapping of the Galician rivers, reservoirs, dams and other watercourses using "Ríos" and "Encoros" datasets from “Instituto de Estudos do Territorio” (IET), Xunta de Galicia ([1]).
Schedule
This projects is expected to be a long-term project.

Galician watercourses
Galicia is a coastal region located at the NW of the Iberian Peninsula. Its rivers belong to four hydrographic basins:
This is, it has a) one hydrographic basin fully inside its territory, b) part of one hydrographic basins shared with various limiting Spanish autonomous communities, and c) part of two international hydrographic basins, shared with two limiting Spanish autonomous community and with Portugal.
Most of the coastal rivers are short and flow soon to the Atlantic ocean or Cantabrian sea. They flow in a small estuary or in a ría. Inland rivers converge into the Minho river or Támega river, a tributary of Douro river.
Import data
Data source
This project is part of a global project to import data from "IET, Xunta de Galicia" (Official webpage), as described at IET_Import.
The data subset required is hosted at IET's services webpage mapas.xunta.gal/centro-de-descargas in "Hidrografía > Ríos / Encoros" section. They can be downloaded in Shapefile format here:
Filename | Link | Size |
---|---|---|
Ríos (rivers) | Ríos.zip | 121 MB |
Encoros (reservoirs and dams) | Encoros.zip | 2.3 MB |
Tags
Rivers will be added using:
- natural=water + water=river, or waterway=riverbank only in the case of some land extensive areas or river banks.
Other elements like reservoirs, ponds, dams, drains, tidal channels ... will be added using their own tags, such as:
License
In a first signed letter IET stated that their data is compatible with the CC BY 4.0 license, and in a second signed letter granted the OSM community the permission to use it.
The permission IET granted the OSM community is described in more detail at the parent project "License section" (See IET_Import#License).
Workflow
Team Approach
"Ríos" shapefile was already split and converted into multiple Shapefile and GeoPackage files. Each file contain a single river basin. "Encoros" shapefile was smaller and didn't need previous edition. It was converted into a Shapefile and GeoPackage file.
Most of the main rivers are already mapped. So each file needs to be edited and integrated with those traced water flows. Editors will delete the river sections already mapped and join them with upstream, ensuring tags and river names are correct. JOSM is a candidate IDE for this task.
First, a few editors will review the main rivers, reservoirs and dams. Then other editors will candidate themselves to edit one single river basin at a time. They will add the missing small rivers that it contains. They will merge the selected files with the upstream information before making the edition public. The main editor(s) will be responsible to review editions advance and correct them when necessary.
Edited GeoPackage/Shapefiles files can be obtained here:

Indica cales son as túas:
- Realiza a edición.
A información a engadir no envío é a seguinte:
- E feito! A editar a seguinte bacía ;D
