Importing Address Data in the form of address points from the Iredell County GIS page.

Import Plan Outline

I have already converted the attribute table for the shape file into the appropriate OSM data format and exported it in the form of a KML file. Then using the open data feature on JOSM i have uploaded the KML file onto JOSM where I have confirmed that it is indeed in the correct format and ready for upload. I am Currently going back through the data and making final corrections to the data, mainly just addressing prefixes that i overlooked and then caught when i did the test upload into JOSM.

This is my first import so if anyone has suggestions on a better way to do the import I am all open to suggestions, but i found this way to be the easiest for me.

Goals

Add Address data to Iredell County North Carolina which is currently not present.

Schedule

Once I have gone through the whole process of getting approval for the import from Iredell County GIS and OSM I expect to import the data over in less than a day as the import is relatively small. I expect to be ready to import before the end of March.

Update: 2/17/2016: I have contacted the Iredell County GIS department and received confirmation that the data is in the public domain. As of now i am ready to import.

Update: 2/21/2016: I have contacted two other users in the area that were active, and have also created a user profile NorthCarolinaAddressImport to handle the import. Unless the other users have objections, the import should be happening imminently probably before the end of February.

Update: 2/29/2016: I added the addr:unit field to the addresses at the suggestion of someone on the mailing lists. I have uploaded the new kml and .csv files that i will be using. There were also questions on the mailing list about the OBJECTID field. I wanted to make it clear that that field will be removed when the data is uploaded but it is there now in order to more easily identify the data and problems while I am preparing the upload.

Import Type

This will be a one time import with no automation. It will be uploaded manually in one or two uploads through JOSM most likely.

Data Preparation

Data Reduction & Simplification

Since there is practically no address data in Iredell County right now, I expect there to be very few duplicate addresses. I have found that the data i have does duplicate addresses in apartment buildings and similar structures. The problem is relatively localized to a few downtown areas in the county though. I believe that doing a sweep of these locations that have a higher rate of duplication after the import, would be adequate to get rid of these duplicate address points. Theoretically it is possible to fix this problem before the import, but i believe there is a risk of loosing or damaging the data.

Tagging Plans

I have already converted the tags to the standard OSM address tags in excel merged the data tables in QGIS deleted extraneous data and exported as a KML file which i uploaded to JOSM and confirmed that the data plots are indeed in the standard OSM address point format.

I am doing this solo, it is a relatively simple and small import. the data does not interact with any data already on the map and should be able to be done in either one or just a couple imports.
