An actuator on Wikipedia is a component of a more global system able to change some of the machine states.

This key is intended to define which technology is used to move a given feature. It applies to several kinds of objects, depending of proposed uses and possibilities.

Actuators shouldn't be confused with mechanical_driver=*. The first describes devices intended to mechanically control some processes (open a door or a barrier for instance) and the second acts as primary motion sources (power a pump or a fan).
