The tag admin_type:PH is used to indicate the legal category of administrative entities in the Philippines.

History
Over time various different tags have been used to record this information. Minor usage of designation occurred as early as 2014 and admin_type:PH was first used in 2016. Soon after this a draft proposal for place:PH was written and mappers started to use the new tag in 2017. The latter was dominant in usage for several years but in 2020 designation and admin_type:PH started to raise in popularity and in 2023 they both surpassed place:PH in usage.
To clarify a common convention, on 2023-07-18, a poll ("Which tag do you prefer for indicating the exact administrative entity or LGU type that an OSM object represents?") was taken in the OpenStreetMap@Pilipinas Telegram channel (with ~85 users), with 17 respondents, with the following results:
- admin_type:PH - 10 votes
- designation - 5 votes
- use both - 2 votes
