Key:alcohol

This key is used both to indicate whether alcohol is allowed at a certain location (e.g. a leisure=park or natural=beach) and also what type of alcohol is served at a certain location (e.g. amenity=restaurant).

Values

The two primary ways this key is used are as a restriction (e.g. alcohol=no) and as a description (e.g. alcohol=wine). Use of descriptors is clear (a specific type of alcohol is being sold) however restrictions are slightly less clear. For example, alcohol=yes may indicate that the consumption of alcohol is permitted at a certain location or that a certain location sells alcohol. The intended usage must then be inferred through other tagging. For example, alcohol=yes used in conjunction with leisure=park implies a restriction (you can drink alcohol here), but when it is used alongside amenity=restaurant is implies description (this place sells alcohol).

As a restriction

To indicate places where the consumption of alcohol is prohibited, use alcohol=no. Other lesser used restrictions include alcohol=off_site_only, alcohol=on_site_only and alcohol=bring_your_own_bottle (aka "BYOB", sometimes more generically called "bring your own").

Consumption of alcohol in certain locations may be conditional, e.g. based on the time of day, in such cases use the conditional restrictions tagging scheme. For example, alcohol:conditional=no @ (20:00-08:00) indicates alcohol may not be consumed at this location during the hours of 8pm to 8am but may be consumed outside of these hours.

As a description

To indicate the type of alcohol served at a location, use alcohol=wine or any other appropriate value (e.g. beer).

An alternative, and more popular, tagging scheme is to use the drink=* key.
