The IATA airport code is a three character code used to identify most major commercial airports across the globe. It is often based on the name of the airport or the name of the city.
While these codes usually are not rendered on a map, they can be extremely useful when searching for well known airports. (which can be done via Nominatim)
The key iata=* has as its value the IATA code of the aerodrome being represented by the object. These tags could be added to the node or area of the airport (the object with the tag aeroway=aerodrome).
IATA codes can and should be verified at the website provided for that purpose by their owner and maintainer: https://www.iata.org/en/publications/directories/code-search/
Originally, the "ref" tag was intended for the IATA aerodrome code, but that is now considered antiquated, and the "ref" tag should not normally be used.
