This key is for the official name of a feature according to TEC, which is the main public transport operator in Wallonia, Belgium.

It stores the name of objects, most of them being tram or bus stops, with the exact spelling user by the operator. It must be set only when this name differs from the public name used in OSM as name=*. Apps that rely on OSM data can choose to display either the operator’s version of the name or the normal name from OSM.

Main reasons why the OSM name will not be identical to operator’s version are:

  • Several operators share the same stop but name it differently
  • Language rules when operating in bilingual territories or outside Wallonia
  • Naming conventions, e.g. Dutch and German operators insert a comma between the town name and the stop name, whereas Belgian operators do not
  • The stop name includes some technical information (e.g. mentioning it is a service stop, a temporary stop, or stating the platform number)
  • Typo or spelling error in the official data

Until 2025, name:TEC=* was used, bus this tag will be gradually phased out to eliminate conflict with the multilingual names tagging scheme.
