A real-time passenger information system shows the expected departure time or the time left until the departure of buses and or trams. departures_board=* however allows for more values.
How to map
Bus stop
Set a node 
at the site where the passengers wait for a bus beside the carriageway and add:
Tram stop
Draw a way 
for the platform and add:
- railway=platform
- public_transport=platform
- name=*
- tram=yes
- passenger_information_display=yes/no
Other transport
You could use the tag also for railways, here it is however standard and need not be mentioned.

In 2022 a proposal was created to deprecate departures_board=realtime in favor of this key. This proposal was rejected
