Users might be interested in the age of the pavement, not only out of curiosity, but also because it can correlate with increased tyre noise. When witnessed, such dates are easy to enter.

Values

Sensible values are any date values, in the same ISO 8601 format as other dates in OpenStreetMap. That is:

The last case is often the easiest to spot in areas you're not otherwise familiar with, as the colour of the asphalt will fade, to a lighter gray, most notably during the first winter.

In many parts of the world it's reasonably safe to assume that a newly paved road without the painted road markings, but where such markings can be expected, has been paved within the last month or so.

When the paving has been renewed, the original paving date could be entered as, for example, paved:original_date=*, if known.

Beyond the simple case

Where only some lanes of a road have been repaved recently, this tag alone naturally isn't descriptive enough. Open to discussion.

A partial repaving, as in two narrow and parallel strips of new pavement filling the most worn sections of each lane, doesn't count as paved:date=*, but rather paved:partial_date=*.
