The Western Power Distribution (WPD) site identifier for an object. This allows data in OSM to be linked to WPD's open data.

This site ID will normally correlate with an entire substation site in OSM. Substations shouldn't generally be split into multiple voltages.

Not to be confused by the "network ID" which is another identifier used by WPD. Network IDs seem to refer to a substation busbar and are less useful for general purposes in OSM.

Area Codes

WPD area code map

The site ID is composed of 6 numeric digits which can be split into two sections. The first two digits form a area code and the remaining 4 digits are unique identifier.

Area codes have fuzzy boarders, there is usually no hard line that can be drawn to divide one area from another, site IDs from neighbouring areas are regularly mixed together along the border regions.

site IDs can rarely appear with incorrect area codes, this is most likely due to depletion all available unique sequences in a area.

Physical Markers

LV Power Poles

Low voltage power poles will regularly have identifying numbers attached to them, these numbers contain the site ID of the transformer or substation where the power line originates and a pole number. These numbers will be arranged over 3 lines with the first line containing 2 digits, 2nd line containing 4 digits and the 3rd line contain 3 digits. For example:

55

2376

002

The first row contains the Area code of the power line's origin site ID.

The second row contains the unique unique sequence for for the power line's origin site ID.

The first and second row combined form the entire site ID for the location where the power line originates.

The third row contains the pole number and usually increments outwards moving away from the origin transformer or substation.
