signed_direction=* is used on a relation with type=route + route=* to specify that a foot, hiking, bicycle or riding route is signposted and the signs are only visible if you walk or ride in one specific direction. This means the route can be used in both directions, but if you want to be able to see the signs on the ground, you can do that only in one specific direction.
Values can be yes or no. The default value is assumed to be no.
The order of the ways in the relation reflects the signage direction of the route.
It is preferred not to use oneway=yes anymore, as it could cause confusion with oneway=* as a legal restriction. See discussion on tagging mailinglist.
See picture above. In this case, the hiking route is signposted with hexagonal shields. If you came from the other side, no sign or trailmarker would be visible.
