was:waterway is a combination of the was:*=* lifecycle prefix and waterway=*.
Examples
was:waterway=river can be used to indicate that a current waterway=canal formerly was a waterway=river. This can happen for instance after a river has been transformed into a different, separated water system (such as a
boezem or
polder) and its "river-like" trajectory is still recognisable in the field. However the former river does no longer have the characteristics that made it a river in the sense of waterway=* (such as a flow with a clear direction down towards the sea and fluctuating water levels, but flatwater being pumped up to the sea in various directions depending on the pumping station being used).
