This key is used to specify the kind of waste or specific system for waste disposal. Usually it will be a subkey for amenity=waste_disposal or amenity=waste_basket.

For a waste basket that has a built-in, separate box for collecting cigarettes and cigarette ash, it is recommended to use multiple semicolon-separated values for waste=*, where the value for the ashtray is cigarettes then. So use for example waste=cigarettes;trash for a classic bin which is made for the disposal of trash/rubbish and has a built-in ashtray.
