MUTCD/New Jersey
Traffic signs in the State of New Jersey follow the national Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), because the state has not adopted a state MUTCD or MUTCD supplement. However, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has published a New Jersey Standard Sign Manual (SSM) that codifies some state-specific signs that it frequently posts within the framework of the national MUTCD. The latest known edition of the SSM was published in December 2011 (as of January 2025).
Usage in OpenStreetMap
An NJDOT-specific traffic sign is mapped as a node tagged traffic_sign=US:NJ:Z1-2, where "US:NJ" is the state's ISO 3166 code and Z1-2 is the sign's alphanumeric designation.
Sign designations
Each standard sign or plaque in the SSM and SDMM is assigned an alphanumeric designation and organized by series. A sign designation follows the same format as in the national MUTCD and SHSD; however, the sign designation for a state-specific sign includes "(NJ)" between the alphabetic category and numeric series.
Category | Series | Sign | Variant | Orientation | |
