WikiProject Macedonia/Macedonian roads tagging
Recommendations
Categorization of roads in the Republic of Macedonia is regulated by the Law for Public Roads [1] where roads are classified in terms of their importance. Motorways and express roads in addition by this law must meet and some criteria to be classified as such . With OSM recommendation and assumptions for tagging of highway=* just highway=motorway implies anything about quality and roads must meet some physics criteria. For all other roads more important is the importance of the road than its physical features. Macedonia except for motorways have criteria for express roads too. On this way and express roads will have to meet certain physical characteristics required by law. All other roads whether they are paved or not, wide or narrow, whether linking towns or villages is recommended to be mapped according to their importance. The physical characteristics of these roads are defined with additional parameters such as surface=*, width=* or similar..
Roughly proposed solution for mapping the roads in Macedonia, out of settlements, taking into account their importance is following:
highway=motorway - (Автопат) Highway that have physically separated paths in both directions and at least two lanes for driving plus a one for stopping or roads defined as a highway with appropriate traffic sign.
highway=trunk - (Експресен Пат) Express roads with at least one line for driving both different directions doesn't have to be physically separated.
highway=primary - State roads of category A which are neither highways or expressways
highway=secondary - Regional roads of first and second category category labeled as R1*** and R2***
highway=tertiary - Regional road with special importance labeled as R29*** and all local roads under the jurisdiction of municipalities
highway=unclassified - All other roads not covered by the above categories
