GEOnet Names Server (GNS) 2009 import
Nearly all of the information from the GEOnet Names Server (GNS) has been imported for Nigeria. The majority of the nodes are place names, but since there is no population data for any of them, place type is defaulted to 'village' with a fixme tag instructing mappers to adjust as appropriate. The places duplicate existing nodes, but few places had been entered for Nigeria at the time of the import.
In addition to place names, the GNS import included other points such as peaks, bays, ruins, etc. The GNS coordinates are only precise to minutes (in DegMinSec format), so in areas with lots of points you'll notice that they may take on the shape of a grid.
River/Stream information has also been imported, although just as points, not as ways. They were imported to help with identifing any rivers traced from satellite imagery. The names tend to be placed near the mouth of a river, or where the river joins another. It's worth noting that if data outlining the waterways is available anywhere, it would be much better to import it than to spend time hand-tracing the rivers. And it probably is available, somewhere.
Mountains/Hills/Peaks do not have their elevations, even though the elevations are available in the GNS data. Whoops. =D Hopefully it will be straightforward to retrieve those nodes via their GNS:id and add the elevation data.

update on GNS data
As of 2015, much better data are available from the US government. They added arc seconds to the coordinates so the majority of the nodes is now at their appropriate position. Unfortunately, they removed elevation data from their database.
Some of the imported data have been corrected according to the new data in the course of the imports mentioned in the table. But there still remains a huge amount of old data to be verified/changed.
