OpenHistoricalMap is a collaborative project primarily driven by volunteer contributors who conduct research, edit the map, develop and document mapping standards, test and improve the software, reach out to in-person and online communities, and promote the project at speaking events. You can contact other community members in a variety of ways.

Legal status

OpenHistoricalMap is a charter project of OpenStreetMap U.S., OpenStreetMap's official local chapter for the United States.[1] This recognizes that OHM complements OSM, especially in academia, and expands the audience for the OSM software ecosystem. Thanks to this affiliation, donations to OHM are tax-deductible for U.S. residents. Despite OSMUS's focus on the U.S., OHM enjoys the support of a global community mapping the entire world.

OpenHistoricalMap® is a U.S. registered service mark (90,019,364) issued to Jeff Meyer with the support of the OpenStreetMap Foundation under a 2021 agreement.

Advisory group

The OpenHistoricalMap Advisory Group is responsible for OHM's administrative needs. It was formed in 2021 to satisfy the requirements for becoming an OpenStreetMap U.S. charter project.

At a basic level, the advisors serve as moderators and administrators of the OHM website, similar to the role of the Data Working Group in OSM. They moderate the OHM Forum and manage OHM's official social media accounts.

As liaisons between the community and development team, the advisors set the project's technical direction and ensure that the platform serves the community's needs. The advisors are the points of contact for partnerships with academic institutions and other organizations. They are responsible for conducting outreach to raise awareness of the project and grow the community.

As of 2024, the advisory group consists of:

Development team

GreenInfo Network, Development Seed, and GeoCompas run the servers and contribute to technical development and design up and down the software stack. OpenHistoricalMap's GitHub projects welcome contributions from anyone; see Development. The GitHub organization is formally administered by:

For an incomplete list of individuals who have previously helped to lead the OHM project, see Origins.
