Expedia Group is committed to improving and supporting the community-driven dataset of tourism-focused geographies and features, making travel-relevant data easier to discover for all. We aim to improve and enrich the attributes of POI features around the world, by adding links to websites, information about opening hours, Wikidata IDs, and accessibility information we aim to make travel accessible for all, that means for the traveler, but also for consumers of tourism-focused and travel data.
Mapping Projects
- Hotel Mapping Initiative - Contribute knowledge and expertise on one of Expedia Group's core products to ensure that travelers everywhere have open and easy access to hotel data. Focus areas include adding missing hotels and enhancing existing hotels with additional amenity details.
- Inclusion and Diversity Relevant Destination Mapping - At Expedia Group, our mission is to power global travel for everyone, everywhere. To further this mission we set out to create a more inclusive travel space by adding places through the lens of travelers from all backgrounds, abilities, and communities. The work includes adding new and updating existing destinations and points of interest.
- Road and Path Improvements - Continuous improvements to roads, sidewalks, paths, and routes to support navigation within and between locations.
- United States State Parks - Using US State open data, add missing US State Parks to complete dataset in OSM.
- Hiking and Trailheads - Add trailheads and parking lots for popular day-hike options in the United States, by state.
MapRoulette Challenges
Our team is constantly thinking of data to add to and correct in OpenStreetMap, they will usually fall under the broad theme of travel, from transportation, amenities, hotel metadata, and other information that could be useful for travelers. Finding a place to stay and getting there is only a small part of a trip, getting around, finding things to do, and finding specific information about a location is what makes a trip memorable, enjoyable, and low-stress. The challenges we create are for anyone to contribute to, and we may review tasks for accuracy, etc. Suggestions and challenge ideas from the community are welcome and encouraged.
