Organised Editing/Activities/Mapping Mt Ushba
Scope
Creation of an Alpine Club Map for the region around Mt. Ushba and Mestia in Georgia.
We are Staff, Students, and former students of the Institute of Cartography at the TU Dresden.
Activities
Our focus is on mapping and improving ways, buildings, rivers, and POIs from OpenStreetMap to create a high-quality map. We will solve open issues on OpenStreetMap.org and contribute our knowledge from our fieldwork in the region. There will also be some scientific work using old maps to show the development of the area. Sadly, we cannot share the maps public due to copyright restrictions, and we will not use them for mapping. However, over time we will add some information about the development of our campaign and the outcome. If you are interested or have concerns, please contact Mathias Gröbe.

Methods for collecting names
For the addition of names, names of unnamed objects were searched for in guidebooks, maps and descriptions, and locals were interviewed. For this purpose, historical sources were also consulted in order not to draw false conclusions and to gather contextual knowledge. In the case of matching names of objects from different sources, these were added to OpenStreetMap or obvious errors were corrected. For example, the mountain Laila was incorrectly named "Lailachala", whereas the ending "-chala" clearly means that it should be a river. Furthermore, the typical village communities were depicted. It is typical for the region that several hamlets form a village community, which has an overlapping name (Becho, Mulaki, Latali). Sometimes there is also a settlement that has the same name (Mazeri, Pari). These names are often also identified on village entrance signs.
Results
For 2021 the mapping is mostly done. We are now developing and improving our workflow for map production. During our field work we found some missing path, delete non-existing tracks and added many POI. For the future work we are comparing the current state of the map with various other maps in guidebook, hiking maps and GPS tracks to identify missing trails. With the results, we are going to plan our next field campaign.
We are sharing our experiences in mapping on some conference. The finished publication will be linked here, so that others may take advantage of our work. There is a recording of the FOSSGIS2022 conference, which is available on YouTube and give a good impression about the over project status.
