Summary

This proposal aims to define tags for various gambling venues. It does not cover gambling activities in venues in which gambling is not the main activity, such as lottery tickets available in news agents, and slot machines in pubs.

The proposal can be summarized as follows:

  • A new tag leisure=adult_gaming_centre is proposed for venues with slot machines (but without croupiers and table games), which are perceived as distinct from both casinos and amusement arcades.
  • The tag amenity=gambling is duplicate with bookmakers, lottery shops, casinos, and adult gaming centres. These categories are now explicitly excluded from amenity=gambling, as each of them already have their own tag.
  • The proposal of the other tags confirms current usage.

This proposal comprises the following tags:

Background

Related proposals

The tags for amenity=casino and shop=bookmaker have been proposed but these proposals have been abandoned. The other tags are de facto. There has also been an (abandoned) proposal for the gambling=* key space.

Current use

There are currently various tags for gambling-related shops and amenities in use. They include the following tags (together with frequency of usage):

To see how these tags are used, I compared the tagging of some larger gambling chains.

  • William Hill and Ladbrokes are bookmakers.
  • Fair Play, Merkur, Löwen Play, and Fenikss call themselves casinos, but have no croupiers, only machines.
  • Holland Casino is a chain of large casinos with croupiers.
  • ONCE, Charlitto, Lotto and Lottózó are lotteries.

Definition

A shop that takes bets on sporting and other events at agreed upon odds.

Summary

A bookmaker is a place where customers can gamble money on the outcome of an event, usually a sporting event such as a horse race or football match.

Definition

A shop of which the main or only purpose is the sale of lottery tickets.

Summary

This tag is used for places with as only or main purpose the sell of lottery tickets.

Customers might take part in the lottery by either handing in lottery forms out of which a prize is drawn later, or by buying Scratchcards.

Dedicated lottery shops are common in some countries, such as Spain. In many other countries, lottery tickets are not bought in dedicated lottery shops, but for instance in shop=newsagent, so in such countries, the tag shop=lottery will not used.

Summary

This tag is used for venues with gambling machines, such as slot machines. There might also be other pay-to-play games, such as video games, driving simulators, pinball machines, etc. Such venues typically have an age limit. As opposed to casinos, amusement arcades have typically strict limits on stakes and payouts, and there are no croupiers or table games.

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. Good proposal with examples and documentation. Although I'm not a fan of leisure=adult_gaming_centre - it just doesn't feel intuitive to me.   • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. I like it in general, but there's one detail I don't like - but I don't think this affects voting. This proposal splits gambling features to shop, leisure and amenity as tags. I would propose to add a tag gambling=* and replace amenity=gambling by it. Amenity=gambling is not compatible to be combined with cafe, bar, pub etc., which might be a common combination; and using gambling=* (which might be yes instead of amenity=gambling, but bookmaker, lottery, casino and so on in the other cases). This proposal 'does not cover gambling activities in venues in which gambling is not the main activity'. The proposed tags are thus not meant to be combined with amenity=cafe etc. I agree that a key gambling= might make sense to tag gambling opportunities in cafes etc. Math1985 (talk) 12:25, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

The current proposal is the result of consensus achieved on the tagging mailing list, and has been discussed since September. I had not seen your comments on the Talk page. I admit I should have checked it before starting the proposal, and I would like to offer my excuses for not having done that.
