Proposal

This tag would be useful to map different types of non-profit workshops.

Examples

Electronic open workshops like fablabs [1] and hackerspaces. There are about 500 electronic workshops worldwide (either hackerspaces or fablabs)

It could also point to various forms or workshops : private, public, non-profit, informal, association, etc. so long as they are non-profit.

Exceptions

Automobile repair workshops should be tagged shop=car_repair, bakery workshop shop=bakery, and more generally any commercial workshop should be tagged with the key "shop" and not "workshop".

Tagging

The tag would define the type of workshop in question, like workshop=fablab or workshop=hackerspace.

If a workshop has several uses, workshop=*, fablab=yes, hackerspace=yes could be used to tag it.

Applies to

Nodes, particularly buildings.

Comments

I proposed a more targeted approach to tag the fablabs via the amenity category, and the tag amenity=fablab (see Tag:amenity=fab_lab), but I believe this approach to be more pertinent and more useful.

We have: Key:repair, Key:craft, Key:shop, Key:amenity, Key:industrial, why do we need a key "workshop"? --Reneman (talk) 15:34, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

see https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/3680/how-can-i-add-a-hackspace-to-the-map -> leisure=hackerspace, thanks Martin. --Reneman (talk) 08:33, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Because some workshops don't fit well into those categories, and in particular even if hackerspaces may (I'm not so sure myself) be considered as "leisure" because they are community-oriented (goal is social collaboration), it is not the case with fab labs. Those are different since they're machine-oriented (the goal is the fabrication). "Repair", "shop" and "industrial" do not fit at all, amenity would but hasn't it been overused ? (I'm told) And as for "craft" it would be close, but I'm not sure electronics and robotics crafts would be comparable to shoemaker, carpenter, locksmith or other similar crafts (wouldn't know how to explain it better in english though). I understand fine and like amenity=workshop with workshop=fablab

Would self-organised bicycle repair shops fall under this category?

Use tag network insteed if possible

FabLabs are in a network, as often hackerspaces, repair café... So the network=FabLab would fit well with leisure=hackerspace. So workshop=* would say with kind of workshop you find workshop=car_repair workshop=electronic_repair workshop=DIY or workshop:clothes=repair (see recycling=*)...

Consider mapping

FabLabs
leisure=hackerspace + network=FabLab
Repair Cafes
leisure=hackerspace + network=Repair cafe
