While surveying Burton-on-Trent for OSM, I've noted down a bunch of postcodes from street signs.
I'd like to contribute these to public-domain postcode projects like npemap and Free The Postcode. I can, of course, manually enter them into the respective sites, but it's a bit of a hassle given that I'll be using an OSM editor anyway. I would prefer just to add 'postal_code=DE13 0QS' and have the other sites pick up on this.
However, since the licences are incompatible, npemap and ftp can't simply trawl planet.osm for 'postal_code='.
Therefore I suggest that we allow 'postal_code_licence=public_domain' (or whatever), by which the collector would declare this postcode to be in the public domain, so that these other sites can use the data while minimising effort on the mapper.

Opinion
- What happens when I travel the same streets with a gps and use the tracks to refine your data? I could remove the 'postal_code_licence=public_domain' tags but what if I don't notice them?

- I agree with Thewinch - nice idea but impractical, it would be better just to have a sane OSM license to begin with. All my personal contributions are public domain or equivalent. MikeCollinson 17:33, 7 June 2007 (BST)
