Proposal

I propose to use the tag public_transport=access_place to tag an access place, which, in Transmodel terminology, means a passenger area within a stop place (commonly known as a station, an airport, etc.) such as a concourse or booking hall, immigration hall or security area that is accessible by passengers, but without a direct access to vehicles.

There can be multiple quays accessible from an access place, and there can be multiple access places within a stop place.

Added on 20 Oct: This tag should be used at the place where a passenger is expected to check which platform the service departs from. If there is no need to check the platform code, there is no need to use this tag.

Rationale

There are currently no documented tags for access places. Such a tag is needed for public transport routing purpose.

The following is a summary of the correspondence between Transmodel and OSM tagging for public transport infrastructure.

Transmodel OSM
stop area relation public_transport=stop_area
stop place nodearea public_transport=station
stop place entrance node railway=subway_entrance
access space nodearea ??
quay nodewayarea public_transport=platform
boarding position node public_transport=stop_position
line relation type=route_master
route relation type=route

Tagging

I propose to use public_transport=access_space to tag a Transmodel access space, which may be a concourse, immigration hall, etc., within a public_transport=station where passengers wait for their vehicles, before proceeding to the quay to board.

It should be mapped as either a node or an area connected to the street network and the public_transport=platforms, possibly with a name=* (if that access space has a name) and a ref=* to match the national stop database.

Examples

St Pancras International railway station has 4 distinct group of platforms with separate access: Midland, International, High Speed Domestic, and Thameslink, apart from Thameslink which is in its own low-level station (hence can be tagged as a separate public_transport=station), the other three is physically on the ground as one station, but without a dedicated tag, it is impossible to distinguish between these three different accesses to platforms unless the exact platform is given (which is not always the case in train timetables).

With this proposal, we should put one public_transport=access_space just behind each fare gates (for Eurostar, the waiting hall after immigration), such that routing software can tell people to wait for a train there.

Rendering

None needed.
