Use public_transport=stop_position to identify the place where a vehicle stops along a public transport route to pick up or drop-off passengers (as distinct from the place where passengers wait for the service). This tag can be used for any transport mode, or combination of transport modes (including rail, bus, tram, flight, taxi and ship).
Use public_transport=platform and/or highway=bus_stop and/or railway=platform to identify the place where passengers wait for the service.
However, marking the stop position adds no information whatsoever when it is placed on the road at the point closest to highway=bus_stop or on the tram tracks closest to railway=tram_stop. In that case it can be abandoned.
How to map
Create a node on the highway, railway or other public transport route. Tag the node appropriately with:
Key | Value | Comment | Recommendation |
---|---|---|---|
public_transport | stop_position | Defines this point as a stop position of the vehicle. | mandatory |
direction | forward / backward / both
|
If the stop position applies only to one direction. This is only necessary if there are routes in both directions of the way. both is the default and thus usually unnecessary. Use it only if you think it adds clarity (e.g. to document a recent change from a past situation). |
recommended only if it removes ambiguity |
stop_position:direction | forward / backward
|
Use instead of the above if that would create a conflict with other tags on the same node, such as traffic signals. | only if necessary |
train | yes / no | Whether trains stop at this stop position. | recommended if yes, otherwise optional |
subway | yes / no | Whether subway trains stop at this position. | recommended if yes, otherwise optional |
monorail | yes / no | Whether monorail trains stop at this stop position. | recommended if yes, otherwise optional |
tram | yes / no | Whether trams stop at this stop position. | recommended if yes, otherwise optional |
bus | yes / no | Whether buses stop at this stop position. | recommended if yes, otherwise optional |
trolleybus | yes / no | Whether trolleybuses stop at this stop position. | recommended if yes, otherwise optional |
aerialway | yes / no | Whether cable cars or similar vehicles stop at this stop position. | recommended if yes, otherwise optional |
ferry | yes / no | Whether ferries stop at this stop position. | recommended if yes, otherwise optional |
name | Individual name | The name by which the stop position is known. | recommended if no public_transport=stop_area exists, otherwise optional |
ref | Reference | Track number/platform number. Some people prefer to use local_ref=* for track/platform numbers, some prefer ref=*. Please note that ref=* might be in use for a network-wide unique reference of the stop position. | recommended if no public_transport=stop_area exists, otherwise optional |
ref:<abbreviation> | Reference | Reference number assigned by a the organisation whose abbreviation is <abbreviation>. | optional |
local_ref | Reference | Track number/platform number | optional |
uic_ref | UIC reference | The UIC identification by which the stop position is known. | recommended if no public_transport=stop_area exists, otherwise optional |
uic_name | UIC name | The UIC name by which the stop position is known. | recommended if no public_transport=stop_area exists, otherwise optional |
operator | Operator | Name of the company that operates the stop position | recommended if no public_transport=stop_area exists, otherwise optional |
network | Local / regional network | Name of the network the stop position belongs to | recommended if no public_transport=stop_area exists, otherwise optional |
exit | only / yes / no | At this stop position you can only exit (exit=only) or enter (exit=no) the vehicle. | optional |
Consider also creating public_transport=platform, or highway=bus_stop etc., for the place close to the route where passengers wait for transport. These elements, together with any associated benches and buildings can be included within a public_transport=stop_area.
