This is a proposal for tagging piste segments that do not exist in summer (without snow) and thus there is no better highway=* tagging. As such this applies to ways only. For mapping ski/snowshoes/... routes (regularly used lines of travel consisting of several ways) use the relation route=piste (alternatively route=ski).
This proposal makes a clear distinction between relation (route=piste) and underlying way (highway=piste) tagging.
Having a unified tagging of winter-only ways is important to have them rendered in winter maps and have them included in GPS data sets.

It should be investigated whether this tag is still necessary with the piste tagging described on the Piste Maps page.

- Considering that the Piste Maps page presented roughly the same tagging scheme in 2012 (when this proposal was created) as it does now, it think that highway=piste is either still necessary, or never was. (and if I were to guess, I would pick the latter) --Dzamper (talk) 19:43, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
