Village greens need marking somehow. leisure=park is too formal; landuse=common is somewhere where sheep might graze (definitely more like scrub-land, or less-often cut grass). It's not really "leisure" anyway, as such. Matthew Newton 00:26, 20 October 2006 (BST)
I don't really see a need to tag it, but if I wanted to, I couldnt. My village green is indistiguishable from the grass that then contiues down the side of the road. When would it stop being 'the green' and start just being grass?. This is also true for other villages that I think of. They are not the same as recreational areas in towns wich are clearly defined. - I do think they are different: a village green is a distinctive part of a village centre in England. I think if you asked someone in the village, they would clearly be able to tell you which part of the land they know as the 'green'.
- I live in a village, in England. If you asked me I could clearly tell you where the green is, and could stick a node there and tag it, I definatly could not attach it as an area though, as it doesnt have a clear border. Clear borders are usually only found on recreational areas, parks, sports areas etc, and these are mostly in towns, and large villages. The village green is just grass, as is a patch of grass that isnt the village green. They may both be public, but they can't both go under a landuse=green tag. They would fit under a =grass tag though. I shant vote against, cause some people may find examples where a green is defined, but I have no use for it. Ideally I would like a discussion to sort it, but voting seems to have started prier to resolving anything. Ben. 03:09 23/12/06
- Interesting discussion. In live in a suburb and when some of the water works filter beds were closed(less than 10 years ago) houses were built on the area with a considerably large(large for developers) area of grass was left. Apparently it's the village green, and okay so it's in the area known as 'Hampton Village' but the local carnival/fair will still be finishing in a completly different park for some time. I'm going to tag it as a village green just because it's easily defined. - LastGrape 16:02, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- Investigating the use of the landuse=village_green tagging, we now (2017) see that many mappers use it to tag all kinds of mixed vegetation (plants, grass, flowers, bushes, small trees) in Urban areas, very often maintained by the Municipality. Recently there has been a discussion on the tagging list about this. I have added a few lines to the wiki to point out this difference between wiki and actual use. - Marczoutendijk 11:30, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
