Proposal talk:Crossing:signals
Status of this proposal?
After the proposal of the crossing:markings=* was approved recently, I'm wondering what the status of this proposal is. As the maintainer of the tagging presets of the iD editor, I would support to continue the transformation (and evolution) of the way road crossings are mapped in OSM, whose next step could be the introduction of the crossing:signals=* tag.

- I don't like crossing:signals=*. Anecdotally, there is even confusion over what it is used for in Key:crossing:signals#Examples that I double-noted. crossing=traffic_signals is well-known despite its issues. It is possible to use highway=traffic_signals on the highway=cycleway (as seen in Tag:highway=traffic_signals#Tagging_also_cycleway_traffic_signals), and perhaps highway=footway too. So rather, this could be improved in traffic_signals:*=*. Furthermore, traffic_signals=* have some attributes in Key:traffic_signals#Tagging that could be incorporated, although again I don't like some of them. --- Kovposch (talk) 10:42, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
@Tyr: I started a draft proposal that perhaps you could help with if you have the time. I decided to start from scratch because this older proposal has been referenced many times in the past; a rework here would be too confusing. I also wanted to jettison some of the baggage around this proposal, since crossing:markings=* is starting to obsolete crossing=marked.
@Kovposch: I'd like to hear more about why you dislike crossing:signals=*. My draft proposal attempts to answer the question you posed, though perhaps not in the way you expected. I'm coming from a strong MUTCD bias without much personal experience in Vienna Convention countries, so I'd like to learn a little more about the distinctions that are important in other countries before circulating this draft more widely.
