Why not just use a tag like "facing=" with a value giving the facing direction in degrees? --Hawke 11:24, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I have just noticed that I have used exactly this for relation traffic_enforcement.
I would like to see it at turn_restrictions aswell.
Tag-based solution with angles
I suggest that a tag with an angular value should be used at least for isolated nodes that are not part of a way (e.g. benches) and for traffic signs whose effects are already represented as a way attribute and therefore not relevant for routing (e.g. the maxspeed example). A tag-based solution is easier for mappers, does not affect other objects besides the one that is tagged, and does not require artificial untagged nodes for the direction of lonely objects. --Tordanik 09:37, 10 August 2011 (BST)
- Ok, I've revived Proposed features/direction. Traffic signs are usually mapped not for the routing, but for other mappers, as a reference to why a highway was marked with specific tags, so the direction is still relevant (or there would be no discussiong on how to map road signs direction). --Zverik 10:28, 10 August 2011 (BST)
An alternative already in use
For traffic signs I used to put them on a node at their real / ideal position (right of the osm highway, at the border of the real road, in countries with opposite traffic it would be the left). I use this e.g. for maxspeed sign to indicate the direction they are valid for. See also here: source:maxspeed=*. --Dieterdreist 00:49, 11 August 2011 (BST)
