difference to divider=median
I'd like to know what the difference would be between median=yes and divider=median. If you specify which type of median there is one could additionally do that with divider=median + median=striped, or divider=striped. I don't fully know what the difference is, and why a different tag is needed.
At first glance I would not interpret the tag as a flush median, but the kind with kerb indicating a dual carriageway, but that may just be my german – non-english perspective. Cyton (talk) 21:50, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
tagging on area
Could, or should this be usable on an area marking the boundary of the painted area or differing surface? Then this would relate to area:highway, which does not include these areas (since they are not to be used by regular traffic). Cyton (talk) 21:54, 13 February 2025 (UTC)

Existing status
*:both_ways=* was already proposed, and accepted to include this layout. The difference is only access:lanes:both_ways=no / vehicle:lanes:both_ways=no legally, but emergency vehicles can travel on it. The word "median" itself already usually refers to raised islands, or non-paved grass and dirt central reservations. Your definition doesn't work.
If you mentioned cycleway:separation=* , you should consider separation=*
