An island painted on a road.

There is currently no consensus[1] as to whether its area representation should be mapped as area:highway=traffic_island, area:highway=emergency or area:highway=buffer. Some users argue, that this tag should not be used, as it doesn't impose any traffic-calming - drivers can go straight through a painted island.

  • traffic_calming=island – is meant to be used as a point on the way itself, or tagged on part of the way.
  • area:highway=traffic_island – is used for an area representation of a traffic island – solid object in a road that channels or slowing down traffic.
