Cavity entrance

A possible alternative tagging would be "man_made=cavity_entrance", because then we could also map underground churches, rock dwellings, hermit's houses and the like. --Gormo (talk) 08:39, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

But I like man_made=cellar_entrance also. --Gormo (talk) 11:40, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
I agree with the need of including underground churches, people's dwellings, hermit's houses and the like, either by "man_made=cavity_entrance" or by adding "man_made=cellar entrance" and then "cellar_type"=church, hermit_house or house. --Josemoya (talk) 10:31, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

How about entrance=cellar?

If not, does man made=cellar entrance imply entrance=yes? Xxzme (talk) 08:54, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

I would assume that it implies entrance=yes. --Gormo (talk) 11:40, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

cellar:type

Does cellar:type stand for the consistence of the floor or walls or ceiling? If it's about the walls (which I suppose, because brick floors would be highly unusual), then I suggest a more specific key like cellar:walls=* instead. A "cellar type" could be anything... --Fkv (talk) 22:06, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

I like cellar:walls, because this would move one of the two "types" (usage and material) out of cellar:type. --Gormo (talk) 11:41, 23 January 2015 (UTC) Yes, change to walls, is clearer. Use is already in cellar:use, so ignore my previous comment. --Gormo (talk) 11:42, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

cellar:use

hierarchical values

As noted in the german discussion page, wine should be a sub-value of storage, e.g. via a subkey such as storage=*. --Fkv (talk) 22:31, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

historical use

The usage of an underground object may vary over time. E.g. a cellar may be built as a wine cellar, but be used for other storage later on. How can we tag both the current and the original usage? Even more complicated, a mine may be used as a cellar later on. If you tag it man_made=adit_entrance + disused=yes + cellar:use=storage, it is not clear if disused=yes refers to man_made=adit_entrance or to cellar:use=storage. --Fkv (talk) 22:31, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

additional values

  • "production", certainly combined with a subkey (product=* or output=* or similar) to specify: mushrooms/weapons/...
  • maybe also "bunker" (german "Luftschutzkeller" or "Luftschutzstollen") - or is that covered by military=bunker?
  • dwelling (example, currently mapped as cave)

--Fkv (talk) 22:57, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

bunker is covered by military=bunker. --Gormo (talk) 11:40, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

gastronomy

Why this new key gastronony=*? What's wrong with amenity=restaurant? --Fkv (talk) 22:36, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

that seems silly. I am editing that to amenity=restaurant. --Gormo (talk) 10:36, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Erdstalls

I think that there should be a distinctive way to tag erdstalls (German "Erdstall", plural: "Erdställe"). E.g. cellar=erdstall or cellar:type=erdstall or cellar:use=erdstall. --Fkv (talk) 22:41, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

Proposal status

This proposal has been written five years ago. RFC and voting are still planning? Something B (talk) 10:55, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

The original author (cycling_zno) is no longer active. Gormo and RoGer6 have done some work on the proposal, but not declared themselves proponents. I also have contributed some ideas on the Talk pages (EN as well as DE language), as I have a lot of experience with various kinds of cellars (I survey and catalog them for the cave cadastre), but I didn't want to take over when Gormo and RoGer6 seemed ambitious enough. Also, I'm short on time and I hate the tagging mailing list. --Fkv (talk) 11:54, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
You rolled back my changes, so I decided to check the status of this proposal. Personally, it's OK for me to finalize the proposal and put it through the vote, but if you are against it, I can create my own proposal in the future, but this proposal should be marked as inactive. Something B (talk) 12:28, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
Drafts should never be marked as inactive because there's no such thing as an active draft. If you make your own proposal, go on but please leave this proposal alone. If you take over this proposal, please read all of the comments (german version too, because it contains a significant part of the discussion). In general, it's a good idea to participate in the discussions before you decide to take a lead. --Fkv (talk) 12:52, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
On Proposal process page not mentioned that draft should never be marked as inactive. As for the changes, I may have acted hastily. I promise not to touch this proposal in the future. Something B (talk) 13:15, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
You are invited to touch this proposal, by sharing your thoughts and contributing ideas on the Talk page. ;-) --Fkv (talk) 13:28, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Defined as "artificially created"

"An entrance into artificially created vault." Why are naturally occurring cellars excluded? --Dieterdreist (talk) 08:45, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

They are tagged with natural=cave_entrance instead. --Fkv (talk) 08:50, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
So this tag is about the opening, and does not imply anything about a closing structure (door, hatch, grate, ...)? Because it doesn't say anything about this... What about an artifically created entrance to a natural cave? --Dieterdreist (talk) 08:55, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
In addition to natural=cave_entrance or man_made=cellar_entrance, you can set barrier=* for doors, gates etc., or barrier=entrance in case of absence of a barrier. Artificial entrances to natural caves are usually tagged with natural=cave_entrance anyway. Many showcaves are entered through artificial entrances for convenience. Users would be confused if the main entrance wasn't mapped as a cave entrance. --Fkv (talk) 09:11, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
