Saskatoon is a city in Saskatchewan, Canada at latitude 52°08′56.04″ North, longitude 106°39′36.36″ West.
Saskatoon
Saskatoon is the largest city in Saskatchewan. A river divides the city roughly in two, making the 5 traffic bridges and two train bridges a vital part of the city. Saskatoon is also host to the University of Saskatchewan -- a campus of over 18,000 students.
Downtown Saskatoon is built on the west side of the South Saskatchewan river. In most of the city, streets run West to East, and are considered "West" if they are west of Idylwyld Drive or Lorne Avenue, and "East" if they are east of that line. Avenues run North/South and are considered "North" if they are north of 22nd street, and "South" if they are south of 22nd street. West of Idylwyld, lettered avenues begin at Avenue B and continue westward to Avenue Y. East of Idylwyld there are some numbered avenues beginning with 1st Avenue and increasing eastward. On the east side of the river, numbered streets exist starting with 1st Street and continuing northward to 18th street, with Main Street lying between 9th and 10th streets. South of 1st street, the streets are all named instead of numbered, beginning with Taylor Street. On the west side of the river, numbered streets exist from 11th Street and heading northward to 71st street which is on the outskirts of town. The exception to all of this is Sutherland/Forest Grove which still reflects the fact that it was once it's own community. Central Avenue runs north/south through the middle. Streets are numbered from 103rd Street to 117th Street, increasing as you head northward. Streets are "West" if they are west of Central Avenue, and "East" if they are east of it. (When Sutherland was annexed by Saskatoon in 1956, the streets were all renumbered by adding 100.)
Mapping Activity
Mapping of Saskatoon began in late February 2007. So far there has only been three mappers working in the area, with two active as of Feb. 2008.
Area notes
Sutherland
Sutherland (defined as west of Central Avenue) is road-complete with the exception of unnamed roads in the trailer park north of 115th Street. Several schools remain untagged, as well as several parks.
Sutherland Industrial
Defined as east of Central Avenue and south of the rail yards, Sutherland Industrial is road complete, with at least one park missing. To the best of the author's knowledge, there are no schools in this area.
Forest Grove
Defined as the area between Attridge drive on the north, Gray Avenue (or the rail yards) on the south, Central Avenue on the west and Berini Drive on the east.
Forest Grove is road-complete with the exception of roads between Kellough and Berini.
The three parks and two schools are tagged. The "Forest Grove Linkage" green area (tag as a park?) is not tagged, though.
North Industrial
Defined as the area between Idylwyld Drive on the west, Warman Road on the East, the railway (just north of 40th Street) on the south and 51st Street on the north, North Industrial area is road complete. There are no schools or parks in this area.
Railways may be of interest, but are not currently mapped. Also, there is a fire hall and a water substation that may be of interest.
Hudson Bay Industrial
Hudson Bay Industrial is just north of North Industrial and is bounded by 51st Street, Idylwyld Drive, 60th Street, and Waneskewin Road. The roads east of Faithfull Avenue are done. Roads between Faithfull and the Idylwyld service road need to be completed yet. The Rugby Fields are not tagged, and the railways are also not done.
Varsity View
The area bounded by Clarence Avenue, College Drive, Cumberland Avenue and 8th Street is road complete. Several schools and parks are missing.
Silverspring
Silverspring is bounded by Central Avenue on the west, Attridge Drive on the south, Forestry Farm Park on the east, and the northern tip of Konihowski road on the north. (The city planning map shows a Fedoruk Drive as the north boundary, but the road doesn't exist in real life.) This area is road, school, and park complete.
Caswell Hill
Caswell Hill is a rectangular neighbourhood bounded by Idylwyld Drive, 22nd Street, Avenue H, and 33rd Street. All the roads are complete. The railway that cuts through the south-east corner is drawn. As well, the park, two schools, and swimming pool are all tagged. Two churches are tagged, but there may be more. Access from the streets to Idylwyld northbound may not be complete.
Mayfair
Mayfair is bounded by Idylwyld Dr, 33rd Street, Avenue I, and the railway as the north boundary. (The railway passes just north of 40th street, and south of 40th A St.) Roads are complete. The school and the park are done. There are a number of churches that need to be added, as well as a public library. Access from the streets to Idylwyld northbound may not be complete.
Brevoort Park
Brevoort Park is bounded by Preston Ave. on the West, Circle Drive on the East, Taylor Street to the South and 8th St. E. on the North. Roads are complete. Parks and schools have been tagged. The trail in the park requires modification as the park was upgraded 2 years ago with a new walking trail.
Eastview
Eastview is bounded by Preston Ave on the West, Circle Drive on the East and South, Taylor Street to the North. There are Two High Schools and Three Elementary School all tagged. Parks and Shopping Centers, Nutana Curling Club and Gas Stations are tagged.
Lakewood
Lakewood is bounded by Circle Drive on the West and South, Taylor Street to the North and Weyakwin Drive to the East. Roads are complete. Parks and schools have been tagged.
Lakeview
Lakeview is bounded by Weyakwin Drive on the West, Circle Drive on the South, Taylor Street to the North and Boychuck Drive to the East. Roads are complete. Parks and schools have been tagged.
Wildwood
Wildwood is bounded by Circle Drive on the West, McKercher Drive on the East, Taylor Street to the South and 8th St. E. on the North. Roads are complete. Parks, schools and Gas Stations have been tagged. Lakewood Civic Center and Wildwood Golf Course are tagged.
Briarwood
Briarwood is bounded by Boychuck Drive on the West, Taylor Street to the South, 8th St. E. on the North and Weyakwin Drive to the East. The newer roads are not complete as many are still under development. Parks have been tagged.
