See United_States_Bicycle_Route_System (USBRS) for detailed instructions on mapping routes in this System.

Routes in the USBRS should only be mapped when there is a well-established route proposal by the state's Department of Transportation (DOT), or even better, an actual USBR Application from the state's DOT to AASHTO and it is placed on AASHTO's semi-annual ballot. USBRs are not to be confused with National Park Service bicycle routes, Adventure Cycling Association routes or cross-country hiking trails (where bicycles might be allowed, whether paved or unpaved). Do not speculate based on Adventure Cycling Association's USBRS National Corridor Plan, as corridors are only plans for the future, not actual routes (until approved by AASHTO). Instead, wait until there is at least a concrete proposal from the state DOT (or a regional transportation planning commission) and be sure to tag the route as state=proposed until the route is officially approved by AASHTO (then remove this tag).
