A  fire alarm box, fire alarm call box, or fire alarm pull box is a device used for notifying a fire department of a fire. Typically installed on street corners (or in buildings [ dubious ]). In any case they are meant for anyone to access to report a fire.

Some cities, like Boston[1], still maintain this type of boxes for emergencies because they offer redundancy over other communication systems, like phones.

In other cities, like San Francisco, most of them are inoperable with no intention to repair them.[2] Theoretically this could be indicated with abandoned=*, but practically, that information would be impossible to find out. As a result, it may be misleading to map these - at least, if anyone was looking at the data.
