This tag indicates that a national flag is hoisted on a flagpole. Generally speaking, this tag is for civil flags; other kinds of governmental flags can be tagged flag:type=governmental or flag:type=military as appropriate.
Where to find them
In most countries, national flags fly outside government buildings, military installations, and war memorials. National flags are more prevalent in some countries than in others. An embassy flies the flag of the country represented rather than the host country.
United States
In the United States, the American flag is generally found on the grounds of state and local government offices, courthouses, schools, libraries, banks, police and fire stations, airports, town squares, veterans' halls, and highway rest areas, and on the roofs of tall buildings. Every post office is required to display an American flag in front. [1] It is also commonly flown at parks and cemeteries. State flags and the POW/MIA flag are commonly flown under or alongside the American flag in public places. Many churches and suburban homes also fly the American flag.
Historic sites and memorials often fly older versions of the American flag with fewer than 50 stars or more than 13 stripes. You can set the flag:wikidata=* tag to the specific design's Wikidata QID.
Some multinational companies fly the flags of all the countries in which they do business. Some places of worship founded by immigrants fly the flag of their home country, which is sometimes a historical flag.
Additional tags
Indicate the country that this flag represents using the country=* tag. Also add the more general-purpose flag:wikidata=* tag, especially in the case of a historical national flag or a flag that represents a disputed region.
