Description

A lava flow is an outpouring of molten or partially molten rock during an effusive volcanic eruption.

How to map

As used in OSM, the geological=volcanic_lava_flow should be used to map the area covered by lava during a specific volcanic eruption. This differs from the geological=volcanic_lava_field tag, which may be used to map a broader area composed of multiple overlapping lava flows from different volcanic events.

Tag the area of the lava flow with geological=volcanic_lava_flow. Add the natural=bare_rock tag to the area if the lava flow is recent enough that it has not been covered with vegetation.

If the lava flow has a name, e.g., "Lava Flow of 1840", add that to the name=* tag.

If the date of the lava flow is known, this could be tagged using start_date=*. However, do not use the end_date=* tag for lava flow features.

If the morphology of the lava is known, this could be tagged using volcanic_lava_flow=* with values such as "a_a", "pahoehoe", "block", and "pillow".
