priority_road=*

Status: in use

This tag identifies an intersection at which one road has the right of way (priority) while another road must stop or give way.

How to map

Tag the intersection node with highway=priority. Identify the incoming ways that must stop or give way and add a node at the stopping point, tagging it with highway=stop or highway=give_way as appropriate.

At a two-way stop, the major road does not stop because it has priority over the minor road. In this screenshot, the intersection node is selected; it should be tagged with highway=priority.

If one of the incoming ways is a priority road – that is, if the road has the right of way at a series of intersections – tag the road with priority_road=*.

  • priority=* – for traffic priority along narrow parts of roads, e.g., narrow bridges
  • junction=uncontrolled – use instead if there are no traffic control devices at the intersection and the right of way is implicit
