The tag indicates a board "informing" mountain climbers that they have reached the "peak" of the mountain.

History

There's a popular map data using OSM among mountain climbers in Taiwan called "Rudymap" (魯地圖). For a long time, the app has been using natural=peak to refer to the summit. However, local climbers only know they have reached the summit when they see a summit board (登頂牌), which describes the mountain's name and height. Summit boards are usually on the mountain's summit, but not always. This is where the problem begins - the Rudymap, who tried to apply the initial use of natural=peak in OSM, caused lots of confusion and opposition for the usage. No consensus and was made after discussions. To prevent further controversies, the maintainer decided to propose the tag.

See the Facebook post (and this) for details.

How to map

Add the man_made=summit_board as a node node. Place the tag in the place where the board is, NOT where the peak is.
