Aerial markers can be clearly identified from aircraft inspecting the surroundings of an underground infrastructure like pipelines or main high voltage cables.
They are designed with a large cover displaying clear reference to the representative colour of the utility they refer to (yellow for gas, red for power and so on)

An aerial marker indicating the presence of a gas pipeline buried nearby. Precise location of the pipeline might be noted on the yellow plate. The larger side of the orange rectangle indicates the pipeline path. Yellow marker poles without the orange rectangle are regular marker posts, not designed to be viewable from the air.

The standard UK aerial gas marker usually lacks a hat but makes up for this by being 2m tall and quite thick. Although post-shaped, it is tagged as an aerial marker (rather than a post marker), even though it is post-like, for two reasons: (1) it is designed to be visible from the air, and (2) the smaller non-aerial gas markers are already commonly/usually referred to as marker posts in the UK. The "material=plastic" is somewhat redundant as all aerial markers in the UK are plastic. However, since most UK utility markers are either made of concrete or plastic, it does no harm to add this attribute.

The standard UK aerial oil markers usually have a hat, but colours can vary considerably depending on the operator of the pipeline. Sometimes the hat is flourescent pink. Sometimes white. Sometimes black with a yellow stripe or yellow with a black stripe. The image left shows a GPSS pre World War II white marker, with post World War II yellow/black roofed aerial marker post beside it. |
