As of mid-2024, this tag is used locally around Toronto to tag sales centres for residential real-estate developments, where presentation, marketing, and sales of apartments or townhouses take place.

("Condo" is short for w:en:condominium, a form of ownership used particularly for multi-unit residential developments.)

As used in Toronto, shop=condo is operated by the builder/developer, and promotes a specific new development (apartments in one building, or in two buildings being built together, or townhouses on one block being built together, or a combination of these), or at most a couple developments of the same developer.

The related tag office=estate_agent is used most frequently for storefronts of "estate agents" (UK) / "real estate agents" (CA&US). Unlike shop=condo, most estate agents will also assist in buying existing buildings or apartments, usually in several areas, and usually also handle selling real estate.

Suggestion for editing software

Because these sales centres promote a new development, they have a natural lifecycle: they are opened when there is a serious plan for the development but usually before construction starts, and are usually closed when construction finishes, and/or most units in the development are sold. This would usually take several years, but no more than 10 years. Editing software could ask to validate shop=condo which hasn't been updated in 5 years, as there is a good chance it has closed.
