At RGC there are a lot of data, missing at OSM:
- Collectivités
- Districts
- Groupements
- Localités
- Parcs
- Territoires
- Végétation
- Ecoles
- Points d'eau
- Cascade
- Port
- Bacs
- Gare
- Pont
This could be uploaded with no or very little redundance
From this secnd group, there would be more redundance.
- Axes navigables
- Hydro Linéaires
- Hydro surfacique
- Lacs
- Aéroport completed
- Route
- Voies ferrées
If someone is able to upload it, I would verfiy and consolidate railways in the whole country and if needed the other ones in the former Oriental province.
I tried to upload railway station or railway lines, but I failed every timesand the error messages where to poor for me that I could found a solution :-( I hope someone else has more experience than me. --Männedorf 11:59, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
I checked some possibilities for importing the data. Finally I found a way that looks reasonable to me. Here what I figured out for the Hydro Linéaires
- Load data into QGIS
- Split according to origin - everything besides image satellite is questionable in terms or accuracy
- convert to OSM using Ogr2osm
- Load into JOSM, download OSM data and compare with Bing maps - this last step basically is due to the fact that I'm not familiar with Merkaartor.
A first check at some random location showed that quite some of the data is not available yet.
Note: Today I finally got Ogr2osm to work. This simplifies the conversion to osm significantly. It also allows automatic translation of attributes into tags.
Any thoughts on this? --Ohr 17:52, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
I started importing the rivers from the Hydro lineaire dataset. First I am working on those with names given. I did some tracking of progress on the page Cours_d'eau. --Ohr 21:41, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
Today I also uploaded the missing airports. --Ohr 19:43, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
- I had uploaded most Parks and other protected areas' borders that seemed accurate. I've added them to WikiProject Congo-Kinshasa/Aires protégées. I guess only National parks should have boundary=national_park while Domaine de chasse (Hunting reserves) and Réserve (Reserves) should have leisure=natural_reserve instead. There are some other proposed tags but they are not rendered at the moment. The Hydro lineaire set is pretty good for the Image satellite part. Many airports are from old maps, and old databases with only precision with degrees and minutes (no second) so error can be 2 km, if the original map isn't wrong to start with. We also don't know which landing strips are still usable, RGC doesn't seem to cary that information. Same precision error goes for villages and towns. I only import those if the satellite imagery shows there's a place there or close by, and depending on what other sources say (if the place is mentioned as being on a specific road, etc.). Most of the major roads from GPS tracks have been imported, as least RN. --Moyogo 16:00, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- So would you recommend to delete the airports again, that are not from GPS? Sounds to me like this would be better. --Ohr 16:46, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, I would recommend only keeping those from GPS. There others from Ancienne base are rather unsure. I don't know how we can evaluate their accuracy or current status. --Moyogo 06:03, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- Ok, I will take care of it. But I guess it will take a few days to get it done. --Ohr 09:48, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- If you have the changeset number (6853643 (achavi, OSMLab) apparently) it should be easier to revert automatically, see Change rollback or Revert scripts. ---Moyogo 21:26, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- The changeset 6853643 (achavi, OSMLab) has been partially reverted successfully. Partially because the airports based on GPS were maintained to avoid deleting and importing again. I used JOSM Reverter Plugin for this. --Ohr 19:46, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

The following datasets have significant GPS-based parts so I think they are candidates for (selctive) import:
- Route - Major roads are already present but smaller ones, tracks, and paths could be added. Translation into tags should be straighforward from attributes. GPS data done
- Localite - probably only in conjunction with roads for ease of checking GPS data done - except Kinshasa
- Pont - if at all only together with roads. Questionable as represented as nodes, not ways.
All would need manual verification before or during the import to avoid duplicates.
The following datasets are also candidates with a very little risk of collision. Here the translation of attributes into tags might need some discussion:
- Point_eau
- Ecole - including université and institut superieure
- Structure_sante
The GPS-based data are mainly concentrated in Kwilu, North Kivu, and South Kivu. Especially in Kwilu is are very densly mapped area available.
- Quick status update:
- The Route data requires significant fixing as it contains loops and duplicate ways. For this reason the converstion with ogr2osm fails.
- The translation from attributes into tags is already defined.
- I have postponed Structure_sante until Key:healthcare is decided.
- --Ohr 16:54, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
- All GPS based data from the Route dataset are finally imported (if not already present before). --Ohr 18:15, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Quartiers

Boundaries of provinces and districts: RGC vs. Maplibrary
Hi! I have had a closer look at the boundaries of the provinces and districts provided by the RGC (shape files). I agree that they seem to be more detailed than the current data from Maplibrary.org ([1]). For example there are some villages in the Iye sector (according to “Ancienne base” data of the RGC), which is part of Tshopo, but according to the current OSM-data they would be in Tshuapa (these villages are not contained in OSM). Another example: Some villages of Pendjwa (Bandundu) would belong to Équateur according to OSM/Maplibrary. Maybe it would be a good idea to replace these boundaries using the data from RGC? Could anybody else have a close look at the data and provide a statement what she thinks about the quality/details? However, OSM seems to have more detailed frontiers of the RDC (this data is neither from the RGC nor from Maplibrary.org). --Chricho (talk) 16:35, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
- Most of the national borders are probably from the Large Scale Internation Boundaries dataset. The main problem when inserting the data from RGC might be the amount of work to combine existing data with the new ones and make sure not to break any relations. But in general if the current boundaries are the ones from Maplibrary any improvement would make sense to me. --Ohr (talk) 18:15, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
The country is called the Democratic Republic of Congo - République démocratique du Congo
There was a time when the name Congo-Kinshasa was used - in the 1950s. It was tried out again briefly when Laurent Kabila came to power - that was short-lived. Because the name is unknown in most of the world anyway, it is preferable to use the full name - which, incidentally, is the common name used throughout la République démocratique du Congo.
