New applet

A small question? Is this "the new applet" working at all? Since the old applet was replaced with the new one I cant do anything? When the applet has been loaded, I select the "create node" and click on the map (as the article suggests) nothing appear at all. I have tested with FireFox (1.0.4) on both Linux and Windows XP. Is it working for anybody else? - Ka-Ka 21:04, 18 September 2005

Changed the text

Some one gave me atip about the -/+ keys, they make the nodes easier to handle. I hope that what I just wrote in the editing page makes more sense than what used to be there. Please change it to be more educational, if you got any ideas./User:Emj

Editing the Map

I just uploaded a couple of gpx tracks that were accepted as indicated by a confirmation email. The tracks do not show up on the map. Do I need to draw them in addition to simply adding the tracks. This portion of the process is fuzzy to me. I really think this is a great project and would love to add lots of data from the Chicago, Illinois area and just need clarification to the adding process. Thx.

Ecallis, You need to be logged in and in edit mode to see the gps track points you uploaded as yellow dots. Also it is recommended that you zoom in quite a long way as the points are not always rendered from far out. I think that’s a partial bug being worked on. Once you can see your track you can use the editor to add nodes (black dots) and then join the nodes with white line segments. The nodes turn red when you hover over them in line segment mode. Currently there is no facility to automatically convert gps points to a final highway, street, path etc. That’s being looked at but its probably a long way off.

Reliability

Is anyone else using the editor successfully? I can only manage to pan/zoom the editing map a few times before it just stops working (usually with a blank white applet, where nothing (reloading page, panning map, waiting, etc) seems to bring back a usable editing interface). I have quite a few GPS tracks uploaded, but it looks like I'm not going to be able to trace-out any of them with this web interface. Owhite 20:11, 13 Jan 2006 (GMT)

City

How do I add a city to the map?

You could add a node and give that node a name but it will not show up in the viewer. This sort of functionality will become better supported at a later date. Blackadder 11:43, 13 Feb 2006 (GMT)

Drawing one way streets in the direction of flow

Just a point, but if anyone has spent any length of time in Edinburgh recently then you'll know that the council seem change the direction of random one way streets on an annual basis. It would be quite a task to go around and change these when ever the council makes its changes on a whim. As an example of their lunacy: Last year they put up rising bollards to permit access only at certain times to the whole of George Street (if you wanted to go from one end to the other you would have to divert onto Queen Street and then back up to George Street between 10:30 and 23:00) Then all of a sudden they removed the bollards.

As a secondary point. How does one go about capturing the fact that many streets in Edinburgh have access only at certain times of the day, or one way access at certain times of the day. An example is Princes Street which only permits busses, taxis and cycles, but on the west bound carriageway only all traffic is permitted between 23:00 and 06:00.

At the moment it is the Old Town that seems to be suffering from random acts of restrictions.

Theses kinds of variable restrictions should eventually be easy to both implement and user amend on the fly with the wiki like features of the db model. The project is not there yet though, mainly because there is no defined set of base attributes that all offline and online clients can interpret, use and modify as required. ie the common language base is currently too small. While in theory the language of keys and values can be limitless (and that is encouraged) there is a need to have some common agreement of principle attributes so that the data in the database can be used by as wide a general group of applications as possible. Very much a work in progress, although the focus is moving that way now that “Ways” are implemented in API 0.3. Blackadder

Is there any way to see your changes to a map?

The article explains that "Everything you do is saved as you edit so you don't have to save." But what if you make a mistake? Is there any way to 1) See what you've changed, or 2) Undo it? Dbenbenn 02:48, 16 Mar 2006 (UTC)

It appears the database is currently locked, whilst changes to the system are being carried out. Changes are therefore not currently being saved. Once the edit lock has been removed, you will see all changes immediately and edit/revert them.NickH 11:28, 16 Mar 2006 (UTC)

Applet video - make available in another format?

I'd think most windows users don't have .ogg movie players installed? To make it useful to those users could you make it available in .wmv or something similar?

I think that most OSM users who use windows would have a Theora player. The best one is VLC. Also since OSM is a free software (sort of) project, the videos should be in a free format. As well you could upload it to YouTube ("YouTube is a free online video streaming service that allows users to view and share videos that have been uploaded by our members."). Their upload link is at the top right of their page. You'll need to sign up to upload it. A similar service is Google Video]. YouTube does not allow users to download the video, Google does, which might be an advantage (you don't have to host it here, saving bandwidth). The account that uploaded the video can remove video from either service at any time. --Rickm 05:34, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

editing?

How do you edit the maps? When I go to the edit tab on the maps there arent many options? only zoom and I can draw lines but cant see any ways to change them or add labels or anything?? Foreign names

Well, what is the policy for the foreign names. For example, should the capital of Russia be noted as Moscow, Moskva or Москва?Vitalyzator 02:51, 4 April 2007 (BST)

The Moscow city place node is given a 'name' tag with Москва (the name as it is known locally), but it is also given a 'name:en' tag with 'Moscow' (the english name) and lots of other language names besides. See all the tags on the moscow place node.

When will my chandes become visible

I've made some edits, by they are only visible in edit mode, not in view mode. Howw long will it take so they'll be visible in view mode also? Vitalyzator 02:51, 4 April 2007 (BST)

It would take an hour or two for it to be visible in View mode, some changes might take upto a week.Note: Not all changes will be shown. - varun.tayur 11:45, 16 October 2010

Google map Option?

While using satalite imagery to map there is only the option to use Yahoo Aerial maps. Why do we not have the option to use other satalite imagery as in MSN arial Maps or Google area maps? --Nickvet419 05:37, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

For this to be legal, the imagery providers would need to give us explicit permission to use their aerial photos. We only have got a permission from Yahoo (see Yahoo! Aerial Imagery), not from Google or MSN. --Schuetzm 08:49, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Potlatch2 has an option to overlay with Bing (Microsoft) imagery. In the area I work with I've found that the Bing imagery is an older, poorer quality base that covers everything and has a lot of newer good quality partial overlays. So depending upon the area, Yahoo imagery may be better than Bing. --Panther37 02:00, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
